Abdominal Pain There are many causes of abdominal pain, and many organs can cause similar or overlapping symptoms. Symptoms such as abdominal distention, heartburn, nausea, pain or gas build-up after a meal are common to gallbladder disease, diseases of the stomach, esophagus and pancreas. Video endoscopy (EGD) allows us to visualize the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine. Office ultrasound allows us to visualize and diagnose diseases of the gallbladder, pancreas and liver.
Colon Cancer Screening: Colonoscopy Colon cancer is the second most frequent cancer in both men and women. Screening for colon cancer is recommended for all patients 50 years or older. These symptoms, as well as impotence may be the early signs of peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Noninvasive arterial studies are used to initially assess the circulation of these patients. PVD may be treated by medication or surgery depending on the severity. Contact us for more details. Swollen Legs? Do your legs get swollen? Do you have varicose veins or spider veins? These symptoms may indicate venous insufficiency. Poor venous circulation may be treated with a wide variety of invasive and noninvasive studies. Contact us for details.

| Pain Management Chronic pain conditions (such as cancer pain etc.) may be treated with permanently implanted devices if oral medicine fails. Home nutritional support is available with gastric feeding tubes and/or venous access devices. Such devices are designed to be portable (see figure) so as to give medication or fluids to patients who are mobile. These devices can be disconnected (see inset), allowing the patient to shower or sleep unhindered if desired. Our office coordinates care with national home nursing agencies for a variety of needs. Most commonly, home nursing is used for the postoperative patient who need intravenous hydration or narcotics for a short period of time.
Stroke Evaluation Hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking, diabets, and irregular heart rhytm are major risk factors for stroke. Stroke evaluation includes blood work, cholesterol checks, electrocardiograms and, when indicated, carotid ultrasounds. The carotid (neck) arteries supply the majority of the blood to the brain. About 85% of strokes occur because of diseased carotid arteries.
Carotid duplex ultrasounds can identify cholesterol plaques which may predispose to stroke. Early identification of carotid plaques may be treated by medicine or surgery so as to prevent strokes. Ultrasound of the abdominal aorta will identify plaques there. We perform duplex ultrasounds at our own facility. D.
