Colonoscopy Preoperative Preparation
Two Days Before Colonoscopy
*Do not eat any salads.
*Generally, two days before the colonoscopy, you'd like to avoid big heavy meals because that's less work (fewer trips to the bathroom) with the bowel preparation.
The Day Before Colonoscopy
*Breakfast: May have boiled eggs or scrambled eggs with toast, milk or coffee.
*The rest of the day, have clear liquid diet only: Water, Juices, sprite, 7-up, jello, popsicles, lemonaid, etc. No soups. No solid food.
*Nothing to eat after the midnight before the surgery or 6 hours before procedure.
*Before starting the bowel prep, confirm your start time.Call the office to make sure that there has not been any re-scheduling.
*Starting at 5PM, take the bowel prep:
1 glass GoLytely every 20 minutes until 4 liters is consumed.
It takes most people 3-6 hours to finish the GoLytely.
The every 20 minute timeline is not written in stone, it's just a practical recommendation. The main thing is to finish most of the 4 liters before colonoscopy. This will completely clean the bowel before colonoscopy. The longer it takes you to finish the 4 liters, the longer you will be up at night.
If you have taken 3 liters of GoLytely, and the stool looks clear and watery, you do not have to finish the remainder.
*An alternative to GoLytely is OsmoPrep
